To Tell The Truth

Tell the truth. Even when it hurts. Because lies hurt more. Hiding is worse.

Over and over in the past few weeks I have been shown the power of truth. How hiding...from ourselves and others, only compounds the issue. Hide from an abuser, and the abuser wins. Hide your feelings, and the situation you are trying to squash only grows larger and more terrible, until it destroys everything.

We are taught to hide at such a young age. Don't tell your teacher that daddy gets mad. Don't invite your friends into the house, it's a mess! Ask for prayer, but don't be too specific, or the people at church won't trust you any more. Each omission is another addition to the house of cards we are building, until it has grown so tall that a breath will collapse it.

How many of us are suffering for our secrets? How many of us are trying to protect those we love and in the process giving them license to spiral downward? How many of us are turning our heads away from uncomfortable truths and driving away our friends and family who fear they cannot be honest without being judged?

If the truth sets us free, why so much fear?

Tell the truth. Even when it hurts. Because lies hurt more. Hiding is worse.
